Lairg & District Learning Centre reopening plans

We are planning to deliver some classes in person and digitally simultaneously

We spent the month of May getting the office ready for reopening. We have been clearing out to make more space, digitising paperwork, upgrading office furniture, rearranging rooms to allow us to social distance, upgrading our IT equipment and internal network, preparing our garden and outdoor areas for outdoor learning and catching up with annual jobs that were missed last year due to the pandemic.

We are installing a new smart board and camera to allow us to deliver some classes in person and digitally simultaneously, something which 15 months ago we would never have dreamed would be possible. This will be helpful both for local students who aren’t ready to return or who can’t make it to the office and also learners from further afield across the Highlands.

To begin with we will be open on a reduced hours basis and with a greatly reduced capacity to allow us to social distance and stay safe. We initially plan to restart our one-to-one digital skills and IT support sessions and outdoor learning classes. More face to face courses and learning opportunities will be added as guidance evolves.

We’ve also been busy with recruitment; thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Adapt and Thrive programme we have been able to recruit for a Digital Growth Assistant to help us grow our online presence and digital class offerings for national and international markets. The income from online classes will help us to subsidise our in person learning for people in Central Sutherland and provide much needed unrestricted income for us. We have also recruited an office assistant through the HERO funding from Highland Council and Scottish Government.

Hopefully by the time this magazine reaches you we will already have been able to partially reopen and we are really looking forward to being able to welcome everyone back to the centre in a safe way.

To get in touch with us the best way is to email us through We will not be in the office everyday but you can call us on 01549 402050 and leave a message and we will get back to you when we are next in.
